Breed: Draft (Probably Belgian Cross)

Age: 35 (estimate)

Gender: Gelding

Height: 16.2hh

Fred spent less than 24 hours with Safe Harbor, laying down to rest, and not waking up again. Necropsy results showed that Fred’s departure from this life was age related. The pathologist estimated him to be approximately 35 years old and said that there was no specific cause for Fred’s passing other than his body just decided it was time to let go. He touched our hearts during his time with us, and we believe he simply relaxed in the beauty around him, and drifted off to a peaceful eternal sleep on September 2nd, 2014.

Fred is a smaller draft horse with a gentle giant temperment.  He loves children–par for the course as he is a retiree from Camp Youth Incorporated.  Fred has 15 years of regular riding experience under his saddle, and prior to that he worked hard labor as a logging horse.  The scars of his working life remain, with a spot on his nose where fur won’t grow back.
To maintain his body condition he does require daily feeding with a quality feed.  He will not maintain his weight on pasture alone.
