Joe Joe at Boarding School: Update

The past two weeks, Joe joe has progressed very well. He longes both ways very well. He will move his hindquarters and shoulders away from pressure. He is leading nicely and is better everyday at staying in his own bubble. Last week we started out with some desensitization using a coat. We put it all over Joe Joe flapping it around on his back and around his legs. He was startled at first which was expected, but it only took him a few minutes, and he stood still like a champ! Next we put it on the ground for him to walk over… This was a much greater challenge. It took a little longer for Joe Joe to muster up the courage to walk over the scary coat. After a few over exaggerated jumps over the pony-eating coat, he finally walked over it. Saturday, we introduced the saddle to Mr. Joe Joe for the first time. We walked him around with it on and let him get the feel of it being up there since the ground is too saturated for any round pen work at the moment. He handled the new experience very...

Joe Joe at Boarding School: Day 1

Joe Joe was introduced to some round pen basics yesterday for his first official day of training. He is a VERY smart and very willing pony. Our session was pretty short yesterday due to the weather, but in that short time we accomplished so much! In just about 15 minutes, Joe Joe was working both ways on the longe line and stopping by voice command. He was introduced to the concept of moving his hindquarters and shoulders away from pressure as well. Joe Joe loves attention and people so much that he has a hard time understanding personal space at times. So, to end our session yesterday, on the way back to Joe Joe’s stall we worked on some basics such as staying in his space while leading.
